Holmwood Produce Lavender Farm, just past the Mulgowie Hotel, in Thornton is opening the gates and inviting the community to their Open Day on Sunday October 20. ten years ago, Gary and Anne Young established Holmwood Produce Lavender Farm on 45 acres at Thornton at the head of the Laidley Creek. the Family Open Day is being held at the Farm located at 15 Thornton School Road Thornton via Mulgowie between 10am and 2pm. after some setback from weather conditions the farm now consists of about 700 Lavendula x intermedia Margaret Rocky Hall plants, planted by friends. the lavender field also incorporates a parterre with rosemary salem as a border hedge and circular rose garden. lemon myrtle oil, used in the preparation of some of the handmade soaps and lotions is extracted from 75 lemon myrtle trees planted adjacent to the lavender. lavender is an amazing plant with incredible medicinal qualities and is a perfect additive for natural beauty products and in cooking. holmwood Farm produce a range of soaps and skin care products using 100% natural non-chemical Australian ingredients and a selection of lavender craft products using Holmwood ingredients. gary and Anne have erected a small cottage near the lavender field to display and sell their lavender produce and craft items. a great favorite with the visitors are the beautiful old fashioned boiled lollies and the creamy cleansers are also popular. the farm opened to the public by appointment in November 2012 and the following January saw the first Lavender harvest. the Open Day is a great opportunity to see the day to day workings of a lavender farm. produce from the local area like honey, chutneys, olives and jams will be available for sampling and purchase. there is plenty of parking available and entry is by way of a gold coin donation. all funds raised on the day go to the Laidley Crisis Care and Accommodation Service which is housed in the Uniting Church Complex in 45 Patrick Street Laidley. the Laidley and Hatton Vale Uniting Churches sponsor the Crisis Care and Accommodation Service in the provision of support for their clients. laidley Crisis Care and Accommodation is a not for profit Specialist Homelessness Service which has been in operation since 1993 supporting the community.
